If you’ve been told you have low bone density, you’re not alone...

And you’re not without options.

Most women feel blindsided by a diagnosis of osteoporosis or osteopenia, and confused about what comes next. As fast as you are told you have this diagnosis, you may have also been told that your only hope is a pharmaceutical medication, or given generic advice such as taking vitamin D and calcium (and you may not have even been told what kind or how much!).

Trying to figure out your next steps can leave you feeling overwhelmed.

It’s common to feel anxious about future fractures, fearful about the possibility of losing your independence, and frustrated by the lack of clear answers. But here’s the truth: bone health is complex and you can’t fully address the skeletal system in isolation. Your bone health is deeply connected to your overall health including nutrition, gut health, hormones, and lifestyle.

At Nourished Bones, we take a whole-body approach to help you understand why you are losing bone, because there are usually many factors involved. Once you begin to identify your root causes, you can take targeted steps to slow or reverse bone loss. And when you strengthen your bones, you strengthen your entire foundation for aging well.

Meet Tracy & Amy - your mother-daughter dietitian duo.

About Tracy

Tracy Owens, MPH, RD, LDN

I’m Tracy, dietitian and co-founder of Nourished Bones. With over 30 years in private practice, I’ve empowered thousands to heal and reverse chronic conditions through precise, nutrition-driven strategies. I now empower women with osteoporosis to strengthen their bones and reclaim their vitality with proven nutrition and lifestyle strategies.

Osteoporosis hits close to home for me. It was truly heartbreaking to witness my mother battle it in her final decade of life. She had multiple broken bones, including her ankle, multiple spine fractures, and finally a hip fracture. She had surgery for the hip fracture but was never able to walk again, which landed her in a nursing home for the last 9 months of her life.

Like so many of you, I was stunned when I received my own diagnosis, but it motivated me to immerse myself in the latest bone health research so I could  learn how to rebuild my bones naturally.

I truly understand the fear: a diagnosis can feel scary, and medications often seem like the only option. But here’s the good news- osteoporosis can be slowed, halted, and in many cases, improved or reversed through addressing root causes like nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and more. Your body hasn’t failed you, it just needs the right fuel and support.

I firmly believe our bodies were meant to heal, including our bones, and I’m passionate about helping you unlock that potential.

Family is most important to me and a big part of my “why.” I am the proud mom of 4 grown kids, and the proud “Gracy” (Grandma Tracy) to 6 sweet grandchildren. My daughter jokes that I don’t have free time, but I love to spend my time doing the things that light me up! When I am not working, you can find me babysitting my grandbabies, playing tennis, gathering for dinner with family and friends, lifting weights, walking, or rushing to finish my book before book club.

About Amy

Amy Fitzgerald, MHS, RD, LD

Hi, I’m Amy and I’m so happy you’re here! I am a registered dietitian, co-founder of Nourished Bones, and Tracy’s loving daughter.

Working in healthcare, you quickly learn how nothing else really matters when you lose your health. As a former Director of Nutrition in the long term care/skilled nursing setting, I helped care for people during some of their hardest days. It was incredibly meaningful work, but it’s what inspired me to shift my career focus to preventative nutrition. Many times, I found myself wishing I could have crossed paths with my residents years earlier, knowing I could have helped at least a portion of them recover quicker so they could go back home, or maybe not have even needed medical care to begin with.

The older I get, the more I have to admit how much my mom and I have in common. When she was diagnosed, I realized that this was something I needed to take seriously too. It’s easy to want to avoid thoughts of aging when you’re young, but every woman will experience bone loss throughout their life–pregnancy, menopause, and simply time. While some of us may have more risk factors than others, we’re truly all in this together. It’s never too early or too late to care about your bone health, and there is so much we can do to build stronger bones.

Being active has always been a huge part of my life, and a part I hope to never lose or take for granted. I played college soccer at Western Carolina University, where I studied nutrition, fell in love with living in the mountains, and met my now-husband. After college, we moved out west and have been taking advantage of all there is to see and do ever since. I enjoy spending time outdoors – taking photos, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking and backpacking. While I’m by no means an expert at any of the above, I’ve learned that you are never too old to learn something new or try something new. It’s incredibly rewarding to go from falling and failing to finding your footing, gaining confidence, and realizing just how capable you really are.

For us, osteoporosis is personal.

Watching more than one of our own family members struggle with the aftermath of broken bones was incredibly difficult. Now facing the reality that it could happen to us too, we know just how important it is to take action early. Living a healthy, active lifestyle might not be enough when you have aging and genetics working against you. Your bones need intentional support to be as strong as possible. If one thing is for sure, we’re not going down without a fight, and we’d love to have you join us on our mission to stronger bones.
